If you always watch where you're stepping you'll miss the world infront of your face.

I am a 23 year old female from Iowa. I work at a nursing home as a CNA/CMA. I love my job. I love making people smile or laugh. I think the hardest part about my job is feeling useless. When you realize there is not a thing you can do to help someone feel better.

My youngest brother Chris (18) has cerebropalsy. He's always been my world. I've taken care of him for as long as I can remember. He's more my child than my brother because of our unique relationship. Everyone knows I'm his favorite. Until recently he has lived mostly with my dad and my step mom. They used a home health care agency to come into the house and provide care for him after school until they get home from work.

Because Chris now has a tracheostomy the rules have changed. He can only be supervised by an RN or family member and because there is severe shortage of RN's in Iowa we are screwed over. The state of Iowa has a program(CDAC) who will pay me 12/hr but no more that 70/day to provide care for him. However when school is out this summer we have no way of providing care for him as we all work full time. My parents (mom, dad, stepmom) work for the state of Iowa in a mental health institution and make very good money. So it looks like I have to either quit my job or significantly cut my hours.

I joined this community because I was looking for support or people who might be in a similiar position. We are all caregivers. I just have to say bless you all for the work you do. For the smiles on your faces when the last thing you feel like doing is smiling you all have a place in my heart for touching countless hearts in unforeseen ways.
